04 / Why generate it
Sharetribe and Arcadier hit ceilings fast and charge per-listing or per-transaction. Upwork takes 5-20% off the top from freelancers and another 3% service fee from clients.
Niche marketplaces win on understanding the niche. Generating your own means you can ship custom flows (e.g. design contests, code review escrow) the generic platforms don't support.

Client funds the full gig amount via Stripe Connect at start. Money sits in your platform account until the freelancer marks a milestone complete. Client approves (or auto-approves after N days), then Stripe Connect transfers that milestone's share to the freelancer's connected account. Standard escrow pattern.
Hide freelancer contact details until a gig is paid. Conversations stay in-platform so you have a record. For high-trust markets, gate insurance / dispute support behind on-platform-only deals, that's a real benefit freelancers don't want to lose.
Either party can raise a dispute on a milestone. Both submit evidence (screenshots, files, messages). A mediator (you, initially) reviews and rules. Stripe Connect supports delayed payouts so funds stay in escrow during disputes. For mature platforms, escalate to Stripe's dispute flow as a backstop.
Stripe Connect lets you specify a platform_fee_amount on each transfer. Set it (e.g. 10% of the milestone) and that flows to your account; the rest goes to the freelancer. You decide whether to charge the client (10% surcharge) or the freelancer (10% from their cut) or split.
